Our Achievements
- 7 miles of the canal from Worksop to Kiveton Park have been restored.
- 5 miles of the canal from Chesterfield to Staveley have been restored.
- 34 locks have been restored and 3 new ones built.
- 2 new marinas have been built.
- 11 new bridges have been built.
- There have been substantial improvements to the towpath, notably from Chesterfield to Staveley and Shireoaks to Bracebridge.
- There has been substantial work on improving accessibility both to the towpath and associated buildings and boats.
- Each of the local authorities along the Chesterfield Canal has incorporated the canal into its local plan. Each now has policies which specifically safeguard the revised route from development likely to prejudice its future restoration.
- A preferred route has been agreed to take the canal through Killamarsh, where the original route has been blocked by housing.
- Significant numbers of surviving original structures have been listed by English Heritage, forming a representative sample of the entire range originally constructed.
- All known standing monuments have been recorded in the appropriate Sites and Monuments records.
- The unique flora of the canal from Retford to Misterton is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and several canal side locations have been designated as Local Nature Reserves.
- There has been a substantial increase in volunteering to maintain the canal.
- The whole canal from Kiveton Park to the River Trent has a Green Flag.
- Hollingwood Hub has a Green Flag.
- Tapton Lock Visitor Centre has been opened.
- Hollingwood Hub has been opened.
- On the former Kiveton Park Colliery site, lakes have been created to form a future marina.
- A free guide to the canal is produced annually.
- There are four tripboats and paddlesports hire.
- There is a purpose-built promotional vehicle.
- There are frequent Festivals and Walking Festivals.
- There have been a large numbers of studies to inform restoration and development plans.
